in a spiral to death. can he do it? i don't know. i have not seen any indication from governor romney or his campaign at any moment, whether it was the convention, during the summer, since the convention, that suggests they are able to maximize, you know, an opportunity. so i'm a little suspicious. but the reality is, he's going to come in here with a little lowered expectations and at least in terms of the public opinion polls. but let's be honest. he's a good debater. the problem with governor romney is he tends to also put his foot in his mouth and create these land minds, like the $10,000 bet. which if that happens in this it debate, it will be a disaster. >> is it the idea of him having some zingers for his opponent who was pretty academic on the issues and has been very well schooled up in the debate process, does the romney camp actually think that zingers are going to get president obama off his game and have an impression on the american people? susan, what do you think about that? >> i think, first of all, you love saying the word zingers. it seems to be very much part of the conve

fingers openly questioning governor romney's strategy. that is bringing him to pennsylvania at this very hour. that's a state where he was down by 12 points according to a poll from quinnipiac university. other polls out show president obama and romney locked in a tight fight. according to the nbc news/"wall street journal"/marist poll, president obama has a slight lead in nevada and north carolina but basically within the margin of error. and in virginia, a new poll from suffolk university/nbc 12 puts obama slightly ahead of romney, also within the margin of error. so, how can romney turn it around? it may not be easy. some people within this romney campaign have concluded he's not actually a very good politician. here's what one romney official explained to politico. he said -- now romney's former rival newt gingrich doesn't go quite that far, but he says that romney needs to reform his thinking. >> i think they're only now beginning to come to grips with the general election. they had a very -- >> scary -- >> they had a very successful primary strategy. in a primary you can raise enou

to allow governor romney to win the state of pennsylvania. done. >> but a judge today said it's not done. in a huge win for voters rights, the judge blocked the key provision for the voter i.d. law. on election day, pennsylvania voters can be asked for a photo i.d. but are not required to show voter i.d. in order to cast a regular ballot. the judge also ruled that the state can continue its advertising campaign. it worries voters rights activists because they say it could confuse voters. a lawyer told reporters if that message doesn't change, then we may be back in court. voters in pennsylvania have just one week left to register to vote. pennsylvania is the 14th state since 2010 to block or blunt a republican-led restrictive voter law, according to the brennan center. joining me now, msnbc's joy reid, senior correspondent. this was a big win today in that pennsylvania courtroom. >> it absolutely was. it was critical. not only did pennsylvania have the most restrictive voter i.d. law in the country, it also is one of the most restrictive states when it comes to voting, period. so really
